Cedarwood oil contains organic compounds called sesquiterpenes that play a significant role in plant chemistry and can interact with biological membranes, enzymes and receptors. Specifically, cedrol and thujopsene.
These compounds:
- Pull moisture from membranes causing the pests to dehydrate and die.

Lemongrass oil contains a compound called citral. This compound:
- Disrupts the nervous system of pests and can lead to paralysis and death.
- Interferes with feeding and mating behaviors in pests reducing their ability to survive and reproduce.
- As with cedarwood oil, the scent of lemongrass is a natural deterrent.
